New year’s resolution

Having a new year’s resolution has been a tradition for a couple of decades now. Whether we formally set a new year’s resolution or not, we all have targets to achieve all the times; such as things revolving around work, family and life in general. To me, a resolution need not be entrapped on a day in the calendar that marks January 1; it could be any day of the year because every day is the first day of the rest of your life.

Now what is making a resolution all about? Its literal meaning is a firm decision to do or not to do something which then psychologically disconnect you from your current self and past inferior self, and set for you a temporal landmark for a new beginning in order to pursue a goal.

There are many things that we all want to be done at all times, but when it comes to a resolution, having one at a time is the best way to achieve it. So, as we have stepped into the brand new 2016, what is that one thing that you would want to achieve this year? How about to Be MRCOG?
Even if you have another priority at this point in life, keep on reading to know how you can make your dreams come true.

Here are the 5 D’s I have set for myself that I follow religiously whenever I’m out to achieve something. Hope they will help you too.

1. Disconnect:
No further step can work unless you first disconnect yourself from your past. It’s not an easy thing to do because our past is our comfort zone, a place where we have been and is a familiar territory. But, no one has ever achieved anything without stepping out of their comfort zone. I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is not learning lessons from past, keep doing the same things and expecting different results. Use lessons from the past to formulate a better future and be ready to try new strategies. Instead of repenting and regretting, take pride in how far you have come and have faith in how far you can go. You got to stop looking at what you couldn’t do in the past, look at what you can do in the future.

2. Discipline:
Show me someone who has no self-discipline and I’ll show you a loser. You cannot achieve a goal without self-discipline, period!!
Self-discipline is not only the most important quality that contributes to one’s achievements, it also makes you a happy person. Do you know why? Because when you are disciplined, you make certain choices that are not dictated by impulses, temptations or emotions. Instead, you make an informed and conscious decision to do something regularly without feeling stressed or upset about it. However, this is a fact that self-discipline is very hard and often temptations are very strong. To avoid any hiccups in your plans, schedule regular breaks, treat and reward yourself. If you still go astray occasionally, forgive yourself, move on and get back in the saddle ASAP.

3. Determination:
This ingredient is a must. Determination is the force that keeps you going against the wind. It’s the will and the strength that comes from within. It is that force that makes you either find a way or to make one. There is no problem on earth that doesn’t have a solution. One and the only trick I know to keep myself determined is to focus on the solutions instead of the problem. This always fuel me up for a further ride.

4. Dedication:
Dedication is the quality of being committed to a task. Commitment is a responsibility that we take on ourselves. It requires mental strength. Reaching your personal goals starts in the mind and finishes with peak performance…taking massive actions. When I do something with dedication. I put my heart and soul in it, I breath my dream, I sleep on my dream, I feed on my dream. Ask someone who has witnessed me when I did my MRCOG and they will tell you that I am understating my dedication.

5. Deadlines:
Often times when someone planning to sit for the exam talks to me, they say, ‘ I just need time for studies.’ And I am like, ‘ O dear, you need a deadline, not time!’
Personally, I love deadlines. I love the thrill they create and the whooshing sound they make as they pass by. Some people may argue that deadlines are a negative inspiration but isn’t it still better than having no inspiration at all? Also, a goal is nothing but a dream with a deadline. And this is what a resolution is all about; setting yourself a target for this year to Be MRCOG.
The trick with deadlines is that they have to be practical and realistic. And once you set a deadline, you got to start from point number 1 and off you go on a journey that has no way backwards.

Having said this, you must always keep in mind that when you set to fly, a safe landing is never guaranteed. Sometimes you do meet failures on the journey to success, but always remember that failures are our best friends in disguise. They come to make us better human beings and more successful than anyone else.

    Dr.Asma…Your msg is absolutely encouraging & extremely right. When I checked back my failures, no wonder that I’ve been lacking all those 5 D’s. The best line I like is ‘I breath on my dream, I sleep on my dream, I feed on my dream’…That’s exactly what I need to do to Be MRCOG. I feel so grateful and lucky that I met the mentor like you.     finally deceided to go against the wind. thank you very much dr asma i was desparately in need of some advice/ some buck up . because started thinking about failure before i get organised for studies. all blessings for you…
